This app (designed by an esteemed professor of nanotechnology) shows graphically how you take a sheet of graphene (a one-atom thin sheet of carbon atoms, whose discovery earned the Nobel Prize in 2010), and roll it up into a tube: a carbon nanotube.

The app draws atoms as spheres or points and the bonds between them as lines or cylinders. On the flip view, the app draws the atoms in a plane (in a hexagonal orientation) which represents physically a sheet of graphene. (Graphene forms graphite when it is stacked into many layers). The user then selects an arrow that represents the circumference of a nanotube. The (n, m) numbers represent where the arrow is drawn on the graphene sheet, as is indicated graphically in the app. This arrow (the (n, m) index) determines geometrically how the sheet is cut, rotated, and rolled to form a nanotube. This cutting and rolling process is indicated graphically in an animation in the app. (Note that in real manufacturing, making nanotubes is much more complicated than cutting and rolling graphene, and is still a topic of research and development. This app shows the geometry of the final product as it relates to the geometry of graphene, but not how the nanotube is actually made in real manufacturing processes.) The scientific relationship between the (n, m) index, diameter, and electronic and optical properties of nanotubes are discussed in detailed scientific literature and in online source such as Wikipedia under carbon nanotube.

What's New in Version 1.0.1

V. 1.0.1 updates:
Bug fix: Determines if nanotube is semiconducting or metallic as user selects (n,m) index, instead of when the wrapping animation is completed.
Bug fix: Wireframe mode remains continuous in effect during wrapping animation.
